Spotted: Data centres humming in the distance, shrouded in the gray haze of our latest climate catastrophe. Carry on, folks. Nothing says "everything's fine" like a sepia skyline.
Unless you’ve been living in an alternate universe, you’ve probably noticed that reality just isn’t what it used to be. Enter: Gothic Girl — a refuge for those who can't shake the feeling that the world has become just a little too freaky.
Hatched from the minds of two disaffected artists, Gothic Girl examines the world through a Gothic lens, exploring the stories, art, technologies, and cultural moments that haunt our collective imagination. From wildfires to artificial intelligence, forgotten folklore to contemporary horror, it’s our goal to cultivate this corner of the internet — our Gothic manor — into a home for the curious and the critical alike.
Now, I bet some of you are thinking, “But Gothic Girl, isn’t the Gothic just an old literary genre full of haunted castles, family curses, and emotionally unavailable men in black capes?”
All of these tropes are part of the Gothic DNA, but they aren’t the whole story. The Gothic remains as prevalent as it is relevant because of its ability to evolve with us. It holds a mirror to our world, revealing the anxieties of each age while tapping into the one emotion that binds us all: fear. The Gothic isn’t just a genre or an aesthetic — it's an enduring attempt to confront the uncertainties of our lives.
That’s why we love it, and that’s why we want to share it with you.
But don’t worry. We’re not all existential dread and cultural criticism; we’re here for the vibes, too. Along with essays, expect book recs and film reviews, creative writing and illustrations, and a few surprises along the way. We'll also be lurking about Instagram, where we'll share artwork, behind-the-scenes peeks at our weirdness, and other wonderfully Gothic curiosities.
